FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

The picnic has past and was a tremendous success. We succeeded in moving into the $60,000 bracket-- $63,000 from the initial report of last Sunday. God was very good to us with beautiful weather, a great crowd in attendance, superb cooperation from all of our parishioners in setting up stands, preparing for the picnic, and operating the picnic. Our Saturday morning turnout of workers was tremendous, and took away much of the usual stress that morning. Many thanks to all of the youth who responded to work throughout the week and gained service hours. Many thanks also to the “clean-up” workers who did such a great and speedy job. We can now all rest, and await the report from the finance people.

There is longevity in many phases of our picnic operation. Harold Knoth informed me that he, his family and relatives, and friends have been frying chicken for the picnic for about forty-two years—well before I came to Mascoutah. They started out frying for the KC Chicken and Beer Dances, and Fr. Giesen asked them to fry for the picnic. They started out, so he told me, with about twenty-five small fryers, and have progressed to the large production fryers they now use. Mary Lou Schlueter has been working in, and managing the “Carry Out” dinner line for over thirty years. Many others have been working in various positions since I can remember. We are grateful to the dedication of all of these people who give so generously of their time. For some, it is a challenge to give up and make room for someone else; for many, it is a challenge to step forward and assume responsibility in these many tasks. However, for all of us, we need to use our God-given talents to God’s work—building the family of Christ in Holy Childhood Parish and always looking to the future, whether we are here or not.

Monday is Labor Day, and the so-called END of summer. Take time to thank God for all the good happenings of this past summer, and even for the challenges that helped one to grow. Take a bit of time to count the blessings of this past summer, and share these special times with your family and friends. God is good, and He loves each one of us in a very special manner.

Our Mascoutah Community “MAKE-UP” blood drive will be this coming Saturday, from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. If you could not make it this past Thursday, please come Saturday. I was talking with the Red Cross Rep this past Tuesday, and she informed me that there was a real shortage of blood—over 400 units in the St. Louis area alone. We can’t do all of that, but we can make sure that our drive is successful, and fill our share. Please take the time and care! When you give blood, you save someone’s life; maybe even three persons' lives.

Attending religious instructions is not an option—it is an obligation! We are called to love God above all things, and our neighbor as ourselves—words from Jesus Himself. Our religious instructions help us to fulfill this mandate by showing us how to know God, love God, and to serve God. Heaven is not a guarantee, but eternity is assured forever!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"Could you not then watch one hour with me?"

"Sometimes we limit God's help by telling Him how to help us. Rather we should say, 'Lord, I need your help. Please help me in the best way You can, in the way You know is best for me.' Whatever it is we need, we can offer it up to God and let Him work it out for us; let Him be our consolation our source of hope; let Him give us strength and courage."

Visit our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM, and on Saturday from 9-10 AM. If you would like to commit to a specific hour to pray on Tuesdays, please call Mary Ellen Mueller at 566-9529.

Thank you and God bless you for all those who were able to set up, work at the picnic and take
down on Sunday. We were blessed with great weather. Many parishioners, parents, faculty, staff
and students helped make it successful. One lady from out of town told me the quilts were the most
beautiful she had seen. Thanks to those ladies who put in many hours in making the quilts. For those
who were chair people thank you. It is sometimes a thankless job but it went well. The food was great
and it was a wonderful evening. It is a great time to meet and get to know new people.
