SEPTEMBER 30, 2007
FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH Well, I am back from a whirlwind trip to California—my first trip to this state. I am sure that many of you have never been to California, and say “so what?”. But it was a time for me to get away for some rest and recreation. Fr. Hitpas is a good traveling partner. We drove over 1100 miles last week, crossing the state from the coast to Yosemite, to Lake Tahoe, back to San Francisco, and then along the coast south. We visited the Cathedral at San Francisco, built in 1974, and were greatly impressed by its architecture, size, simplicity and functionality. I could have spent several hours more studying its design and how it was built. If you go to San Francisco make sure you visit the Cathedral. It is great! At any rate, I am home again, and it feels good. Our parking lot in front of church is progressing well. I believe that by next Sunday, we will be parking on the “black-top” surface, although it may not be striped yet, nor all of the landscaping and electrical work done. To me, it is shaping up well! Thanks to all who have had a part in its construction! We begin the month of October on Monday. October is dedicated to the recitation of the Rosary. With all of the problems in our country, around the world, and in our own families, and if we believe that no prayer goes unanswered, then I must ask each and every one of you to make this a special month of prayer. Please say the Rosary every day, whether in your travels—to work, from work, on a trip, to the lake, from the lake, at home, in bed, with the family gathered, wherever—pray the Rosary to Mary to intercede for all, for the world, for peace, for respect of human life, for whatever intentions that you may have. We cannot blame others for all the problems if we have not been a part of the solution. Indifference is a problem—period! Being too busy is a problem—our priorities are not in right order! Not praying is like not needing God’s help, or appreciating His blessings and forgiveness. If prayer can move mountains, as they say, then some of us, or many of us, are not pulling our share or doing our part. We all need our God—we have to come to Him! Pray to Mary to show us the way, and help us on the way! Tuesday is the Feast of our Holy Guardian Angels. In all reality, when was the last time that we thought of our Guardian Angel; or thank our Guardian Angel, our protector? God sends us divine protection to ward off the temptations and assaults of the devil—a holy spirit to fight a fallen evil spirit. Thank God for the gift, and try to become more conscious and appreciative of this divine help. Next Sunday is Welcome Sunday. Make plans to meet after the Masses in the parish center, or in front of church for coffee and donuts; meet new parishioners, or parishioners that you may never have met before, or know. After all, our whole year of celebration of the Sesquicentennial has been to celebrate our past, present, and future, which is given to us in the members of our parish as a family. We all need one another— united we stand, divided we fall. Make the Body of Christ a top priority—not merely our personal family and friends, but all who gather with us in prayer.
We are bringing the WHOLE COMMUNITY TOGETHER for an exciting celebration of faith and family! This Celebration entitled "LIGHTEN UP!" promises to lighten up our minds, bodies, and souls as we laugh, and to remind us of the richness of our faith heritage! The church's favorite funnyman, Doug Brummel, and his 'cast of characters' will be leading us on a faith journey we won't soon forget! It truly is a Catholic Comedy with a message for the whole family! This two-night series will begin at 6:47 p.m. SHARP! Each night is different! Come both nights! Refreshments too! So invite everyone you know to come to Holy Childhood Church to Lighten Up! FREE Admission! Thanks to everyone's efforts, a substantial amount of money was raised for the CUP family of services in Metro East: the food pantry & Emergency services, Holy Angels Shelter, the Family Center, Neighborhood Law office and Griffin Center programs. Special thanks to Mr. Hap Burke of St. Louis, who held the winning ticket but disclaimed the prize in favor of CUP. As a result we will be blessed with a top flight vehicle to be used to pick up food and other items donated for the poor.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION "Could you not then watch one hour with me?" "Prayer is opening our minds, our hearts and our ears to the love of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is not a practice of convincing God to see things our way; rather it is allowing God to show us His way, allowing Him to change our hearts" (Hope for the Journey, Fr. Jack Spalding). Come to our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM, and on Saturday from 9-10 AM. If you would like to commit to a specific hour to pray on Tuesdays, please call Mary Ellen Mueller at 566-9529.
