FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

Well, November is here, and today, it still feels like summer.  God has been very good to us in giving us opportunities to get all of our outside work accomplished.  By the end of this month, we may well feel the wrath of winter.  At any rate, we take it one day at a time, one second at a time, and thank God for His goodness to us.  At the same time, we work to accomplish all that He asks of us in good works and in our spiritual enrichment.  “WORK AND PRAY” is the motto of St. Benedict, and the Benedictine Order.  It is a fitting way of life for any of us -- Work and Pray!

Your prayers are asked for Msgr. Angelo Lombardo, who has cancer.  It was diagnosed this past Monday and is said to be all through his system.  Angie has come to help me so many times in this parish at confessions and at Mass.  When I went to the seminary in l948, Angie was there, three years ahead of me.  He sort of took me under his wing and was a great mentor.  When I went to St. Meinrad for Major Seminary, Angie was there, and continued his guardianship and mentoring. He has always been a good priest with both feet on the ground.  Pray to God for his well being!

This week, on Thursday, twenty-five youth from our CYO, and eleven adults, including myself, will travel to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Going to a convention can be a fun thing,  but it is also an educational experience for all of us to see and be part of 20,000 youth of our Catholic faith.  It is an experience to the adults, even though they have to be chaperones and guardians to our own youth, to see the spirit working in the “young church” and building the future church.  It is also an opportunity for our youth to see what others are doing, what they, too, could accomplish in our own parish and diocese.  It is a great opportunity to bring back new ideas and new spirit.   Hence, going to the convention is not a reward or a time to have a good time, but a time to grow with others, to enjoy the spirit of Christian goodness, and to share in the goodness of others—to learn and to share.  We encourage our people to take in workshops and educational sessions.  Pray for all of us that it will be a great experience of our young church and us older ones, the chaperones, and the parents.

Next week-end is clean up day here at church.  CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES—here is an opportunity to get in some of your church hours.  It is your opportunity to be doing something for your parish.  As I told you before, I am not going to dream up projects for you at the last moment!  Now is the time that we will be needing you—you make the time!  Parents, this is your responsibility to help them get in their service hours.  First things first, if you want to get confirmed.

Thanks again to all of the fellows working on the lighting for the parking lot.  Days are getting shorter, and time available is in the same boat.  Contact Pepso Mattern if you can help on this project.  Maybe you can help on leveling out the dirt during the day after the conduits are in place, or just clean up.

Your prayers for the sick are in continuous need—for our cancer patients, and for two of our parishioners who are in Barnes Hospital recuperating from serious surgeries.

PRAYER REQUEST   In less than 2 weeks a spirited group of young people and their young-at-heart chaperones will be embarking on a journey to "Discover the Way" in Columbus, Ohio, for the 2007 National Catholic Youth Conference. You, the parishioners of Holy Childhood Parish have been a tremendous support to us as we have prepared for this journey . We ask for your continued prayers as we learn more about ourselves, each other, our faith, and our God at NCYC. At the exits to the church you will find baskets containing sailboats. Please pick up a boat and pray for that person. Pray that this person will truly "Discover the Way" at this year's conference and that God will bless all of us with a safe journey. Thank you and God bless you.

Sesquicentennial Celebration Video Project Disclaimer:   In the process of making our celebration documentary at the many events of the past year you may have requested not to be on tape. Due to the fact that you were present, it is very likely you MAY appear in the presentation. If you were approached by the videographer there could be a chance you may not appear on the video. We appreciate your enthusiasm for our project and we hope you enjoy our celebration documentary at the closing banquet.

Faith is both caught and taught!  Are you looking for resources to help you pass your faith on to your children?  Would you like to learn more about how other families in the parish are doing this?  Then visit the parish's new "Domestic Church" website (http://domesticchurch.wordpress.com/).  On this new site you will find resources and encouragement to help us live-out our faith in our families and help our children to grow-up in their faith and make it their own.  The site includes resources for children and teens as well as parents.  Please visit, let us know what you think (gaharne@gmail.com) and share the resources that you are using in your own families.

New Movie opening on October 26, 2007. The award winning movie "Bella" opens this weekend. Bella's true mission is to recall people to what is most important in life, to remind them of their own humanity and of the beauty of choosing life and learning to love. It could be a significant factor in turning the tide toward a culture of life. It is true that one swallow does not a summer make; one battle won't win the war, and it will take a lot more than a movie to change American culture and make everyone rediscover what it means to open to life and love. But if a movie can change or save even one life - and Bella has already saved hundreds before hitting the big screens - then it's well worth the effort.
