FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

Advent is really upon us now, and I hope that all of us are in the spiritual preparation that comes with the season.  Advent is not a season of “make-believe” where we try to re-establish the first coming of Christ.  That one is past, and although we look to the past to think about Christ stepping out of His eternal home in heaven to become a man in order to save us from our sins, we are in the present time.  We know that there will be a final coming, as Scriptures tell us, and we look forward to that time, in order that we can be taken to heaven to be with God.  However, we also must look at the present and do the work that needs to be done now, building the spiritual home that can welcome Christ whenever He calls us.  As I spoke about last Sunday in the homily, it is not the quantity of time that we are to concern ourselves about, but it is the QUALITY OF THE TIME that we work with and produce within ourselves.  Take the time to pray, to read about the sacredness of the season, and the expectation of what God has in store for those who really believe in Him, and want to grow with Him.  For many, this will be their last Advent and Christmas season here on earth.  For all of those who passed away, the Advent prior to their calling was their last.  You know neither the day nor the hour, as Scripture tells us.  God wants to be with us and help us.  We must make the room!

Thanks to all those who came last Sunday to put up some of our decorations.  We did not advertise this event too heavily last week-end, since we will need a bigger crew on the Sunday before Christmas, Dec. 23rd.  We need to keep a sense of Advent, a season of preparation and expectation for the coming of Christ.

Today, at Zion Lutheran Church, they will have their Christmas Choral event, with choirs and musicians from many of the local churches.  It begins at 3:00 P.M.  I do not believe that Holy Childhood has any representation at this event.  Our Adult Choir sang at the Shrine on December 5th.

Our parking lot is progressing slowly, but surely.  We are having Bernruetter Sod Company put sod down between the parking lot and the sidewalks.  It is the best way to stop erosion over the winter and to also improve the looks.  We are in the process of making the electrical connections in our church basement.  Since we have increased the number of lights on the lot, we have to account for that in some wiring and switching.

It was great to see the good number of adults—regulars and parents, who came to the school children's Mass on Wednesday.  I wish that more parents would come so that the children could share with them the Eucharist, and the children could also learn from them that moms and dads, adults old and young, need God in their lives, and need to thank God for their blessings.  Faith is caught, not taught!  Actions speak louder than words! Teach the values that God wants us to teach, not the values of the world and commercialism.

Pray for the sick!   We have many persons in the hospital, as well as at home that need our prayers.  Maybe you are one of them.  We all take consolation that someone is praying for us.  When we widen our horizons and pray for others, we also can count on the prayers of others for us.  It is a good feeling not to be alone in our miseries.

  News IN OUR PARISH

CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIALS    now is the time to send in your request for Christmas Flower memorials for  your deceased loved ones. For $10 you can list one or two individual names or one or two family names. The HCCCW is sponsoring this program. The money is used for the purchasing of the Christmas flowers and any other items needed for the altar.   For your convenience, there is an envelope (dated Dec. 2) in your church envelope box for Christmas Flower donations, or use a white envelope and address it to HCCCW. Make sure you list who the memorial is for and the donor's name on the envelope. Please make checks out to HCCCW. Donations are needed by December 18th to insure your loved ones' names are included on the list displayed at all entrances to the church. For more information contact Pat Bowker 566-7089.

Don't wait until the last minute.... Start your Christmas Shopping Early!    The 8th Grade Class is selling high quality "That's my Pan" personalized baking pans to raise funds for their 8th Grade Class Trip.  There is a display of the pans (available in 9 x 13, 9 x 9 & pie pans) in the school hallway.  All of the pans come with lids and both the lid & the pan are personalized! They make excellent Christmas gifts & benefit our 8th Grade Class Trip. For more information contact: Dianne Surmeier 566-4926 or 304-4881.

COOKIES WANTED    Once again, the Annual Diocesan Christmas Dinner will be held at Althoff Catholic High School on Tuesday, December 25, 2007.   We are looking for donations of home-baked cookies. Our guests always look forward to your delicious treats. Last year, we served Christmas dinners to more than 1100 individuals - those who shared the meal at Althoff and those who had a dinner delivered to their homes.   Holy Childhood cookie donations must be dropped off in the church breezeway by 9 AM on December 24th. Please label your cookies "Diocesan Cookies."   OR you may deliver them to Althoff High School, 5401 West Main Street, Belleville, on Monday, December 24th from 9 am until noon in the cafeteria (come in the front door and then down the stairs). Thank you!

Knights of Columbus will meet this Thursday, at 8:00 PM in the parish center. The KC's are now holding an attendance drawing at the monthly meetings.   The drawing starts at $100 and increases by the number of members present if no winner that month. You must be present to win.   So join us and share in our fraternity, learn what is happening in the KC's and maybe go home with a little extra cash.

Holy Childhood Council  of Catholic Women will meet on December 11th beginning with Christmas Dinner at 6:00 PM. Turkey and all the trimmings! Business meeting will follow.  Bring a white elephant for the gift exchange.  We will have music!

SHEPHERD SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22-23 Thanks to everyone who donated food to the Boy Scouts "Scouting for Food" drive in November.  A large amount of food was collected by the Scouts and given to the local food pantry.  For our Shepherd Sunday collection this month, the pantry is asking for non-food items, such as: laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet tissue, Kleenex, shampoo, lotion, and baby diapers (size 2 & 3).

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"Could you not then watch one hour with me?"

"A spirit of trust is the very essence of the devotion to the Divine Mercy,

to such an extent that without trust there can be no devotion as Jesus wished it.

'The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, '

He said, 'and that is - trust'."

(the Road to Perfection and Mission of St. Sister Faustyna)

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS annually sponsors the Secret Santa program to provide gifts for the foster children under their care. This year we collected gifts for over 400 children. Fortunately, we have plenty of sponsors who fulfill the wish lists of all these children. In addition, we have, on a limited basis, collected gifts for a number of needy families for Christmas during the last couple of years. This year however, we had a significant influx of families in need; in fact, we have 23 families we hope to support this Christmas, but we need help to make this a reality. We need eight sponsors who are willing to be Secret Santas for the remaining families. We will provide a family wish list to anyone interested in being a Secret Santa sponsor. Items will be needed no later than December 19th. This is a time of giving, won't you please help our cause? If interested, or need more information, please call: Ed Ackermann at CSS, (618) 394-5900 (ext 106), or send an e-mail to: eackermann@cssil.org.
