FATHER'S TWO-CENTS WORTH

With this week, we begin the fullness of Lent, with the daily readings in such an order as to lead us to our God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Try to take at least six minutes a day to pray, and to love your God better.  Use the Little Black Book as often as possible, even if you miss some days, to keep on this road to heaven.  It is your life, and the way we live it will indicate our eternity.

On Monday, we have the first of our Soup Suppers and talks.  Msgr. William Hitpas will be the first of our speakers.  Many of us know “Father Bill” from the time he helped out here at Holy Childhood, l974-l982, with Sunday Mass and other events.  He is a very great speaker, and was nominated one year as the “Out-Standing Preacher” in the St. Louis area.  I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy his talk -  MONDAY, 6:00 P.M. in the parish center!

Do not forget our special Lenten services during the week, on Wednesday, Mass at 5:30 P.M., and on Fridays, Stations of the Cross and Benediction, at 5:30 P.M.

Next Sunday, the CYO along with many other adults and high schoolers, will conduct a LUKE  18, which is a retreat for our 7th & 8th grade students.  Pray for all who are involved in this event—the 7th and 8th grade students, the presenters, the many other persons involved in making the event go well and without “glitches”.

Next Sunday is Commitment Sunday for our CATHOLIC SERVICES AND MINISTRY APPEAL.  Please bring your pledge cards that day, and be involved in this special ministry to the people of our diocese.  I believe all of us get many appeals from various needs of medical groups, school groups, missions, hospitals, and organizations helping others.  Our CSMA appeal helps our own parish and our diocese.  Of the 28 agencies that the CSMA helps, our parish and parishioners benefit from l8 of these agencies in many different ways.  We are building the Family of God in our own locale, and it will come back to us both in life and in eternity.  Make a commitment, one that can do a lot of good, and that you can live with, on an installment basis—monthly gifts, to build the Body of Christ.

It is good to be back home, in my own bed, and with the people of the parish, the people that I love and give my life for.  I thank you for the many prayers and concern you have for me and had for me.  I ask you to continue to support our parish and myself in the work we have as the Catholic Church in Mascoutah by your good deeds, your prayers, and your commitment to Holy Childhood Church.  Our Sesquicentennial Celebration is now over, and we have embarked on a new era.  We looked at our past, celebrated the present, and now move into the future.  Set the tone in your homes, for your children and friends, make the days ahead better than the past.  Pray for me that I can help you in this endeavor, and be a good shepherd to all of you.

DIOCESE OF BELLEVILLE

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Each year the Lord Jesus calls the entire Church to a special season of penance and renewal. As we begin this holy time of Lent, we should reflect on our need for conversion of heart, prayer, charitable works and penance.

The season of Lent extends this year from Ash Wednesday, February 21, to the Mass of the Lord's Supper, April 6 inclusive.

  1. 1. All Catholics who are 14 years of age and older are to observe the penitential practice of abstinence which consists of refraining from the consumption of meat. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

  2. 2. In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting.

  3. 3. On days of fasting and abstinence, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

  4. 4. If a person is unable to observe the above regulation due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

  5. 5. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices.

  6. 6. To completely disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

  7. 7. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.

  News IN OUR PARISH

From the Pastor's Desk…  Our parish participation goal for the 2008 Catholic Service & Ministry Appeal is 253 families and our financial target is $38,734 to support the education, pastoral and religious ministries which benefit our parish as well as the people of our diocese. You will have an opportunity to make your pledge at Mass next weekend. No gift is too great or too small and your contribution will do so much to help build the Kingdom of God here in our parish and across southern Illinois.

Vatican International Exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles   In His Mercy, God has shown us the flesh and blood of Jesus through Eucharistic miracles. Come see 126 Vatican authenticated miracles of the world. This walk-through exhibit will be available for viewing here at Holy Childhood on Saturday, March 8th from 2-7 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 1 PM. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, take-down, and to stay with the exhibit during public viewing times. If interested please contact Susan Anderson at 746-4775.

BOOK CLUB  Join us on Tuesday, Feb. 19th at 7 PM in the Parish Center youth room as we discuss, A Philadelphia Catholic in King James's Court by Martin De Porres Kennedy. After the tragic death of his father, Michael O'Shea travels from his native Philadelphia to rural Kentucky for the summer. In this land of tobacco farming bluegrass music, and devout fundamentalist Christianity, he is compelled to explain and justify the Catholic Faith. His only defense...the Bible.

HCCCW REMINDER  We want to thank you for your past support of this project and hope you will continue your support by purchasing or selling the bi-monthly quilt raffle tickets. All proceeds go to support the needs of our church, altar breads, wine, cleaning and care of the altar linens and much  more. Additional tickets are available at all entrances of church or at the rectory. Please drop sold tickets in the collection baskets or send to the rectory. Also please return any unsold tickets. First drawing will be held at our March 11th meeting. If you have any questions please contact Lorraine Wuebbels at 566-4126 or Pat Fletcher at 566-9570.

This campaign will run from January 19th to February 18th. Requested items: AT & T cards (the only ones they can use), Wet Wipes, tooth brushes, hand cream, antibacterial soaps/hand sanitizer, candy (gum, M&M's, snacks, hard candy, etc.)

FAITH IS BOTH CAUGHT AND TAUGHT! Are you looking for resources to help you pass your faith on to your children? Would you like to learn more about how other families in the parish are doing this? On this new site you will find resources and encouragement to help us live-out our faith in our families and help our children to grow-up in their faith and make it their own.  The site includes resources for children and teens as well as parents. Please visit, let us know what you think (gaharne@gmail.com) and share the resources that you are using in your own families.

ATTENTION FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES coming up March 8-9, there will be a Quest experience held at St. Dominic parish in Breese, IL. For more information/application contact Ron Hulliung or Kathy Renth.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"Could you not then watch one hour with me?"

"Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy. For centuries people have invoked Mary under this title and Pope John Paul II presented it to us again to emphasize the unique role Mary plays in God's eternal plan for mercy. In his encyclical letter 'Rich In Mercy' he devotes an entire section to Mary, the 'Mother of Mercy'. She is the one, he explains, who  has the deepest understanding of God's mercy, the one who, more than anyone else, deserved and received mercy. Called in a special way to share her Son's mission to reveal His love, she continues to proclaim His mercy." (The Divine Mercy ).

Mary can teach us how to live for God, how to get to know God, how to prepare our souls for God and how to love God. Join us in Eucharistic Adoration to help in your journey toward God. Adoration is available Tuesdays following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM and Saturday from 9-10 AM.

Join your fellow parishioners in prayers

at Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday

after the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM,

and on Saturday from 9 to 10 AM.

Come for any amount of time you would like to share with our Lord

Contact Mary Ellen Mueller at 566-9529 if you can commit to a specific hour.

Valentine's Day has been commercialized so much we have lost the meaning. The Church celebrates three saints who were named Valentine and all died for their faith. One Valentine was imprisoned and fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. He wrote her a letter and signed it, “From your Valentine”.  The feast of Valentine’s Day celebrates love and romance. Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day and in the months ahead:

© Write a love letter to God and read it to Him as a prayer.

© Memorize Romans 8: 38-39 and thank God that absolutely nothing can separate you from His love.

© Surprise someone with a warm hug or a listening ear.

© Make a list of people who love you and thank God for each one.

© Say John 3:16 aloud in a personal way, like this: God loved (me) so much that he gave His only Son for (me). Insert your child’s or someone else’s name.

© Put love notes in lunchboxes, coats, briefcases, cookie jars, etc.

© Look in the newspaper and find people who need a special measure of God’s love and pray for them.
