FATHER'S TWO-CENTS WORTH

I just want to tell you about our Soup Supper's speakers.  The past two times, with Msgr. Carl Scherrer and Fr. Elmar Mauer have been tremendous.  You are really missing a great evening when you do not attend.  There were about 65 persons who attended this past week to learn about the “Resurrection”.  Fr. filled out his talk with a mixture of personal experiences, jokes, and puns, which made it very educational and entertaining.  Monday, March 3rd, will be the last of our special speakers, and will feature Msgr. Bill Hitpas, who helped us with Sunday Mass, here at Holy Childhood, from l974 to l982.  I am sure all of us will be truly enlightened and entertained by his talk.  Please come and help yourself.  The meal begins at 6:30 P.M., and the talk at 7:00 P.M. in the parish center.

I also wish to thank all those who have been coming to Lenten Mass on Wednesday and the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings. It is consoling to see so many families and individuals making the extra effort to grow in Christ and to pray extra.  God bless all of you who are making good use of this Lenten Season.  Mass on Wednesday is at 8:00 A.M. in the morning (school Mass), and 5:30 P.M. in the evening.  Stations are at 5:30 P.M. on Friday evenings.  The time was chosen so that people come home from work and go straight to Lenten Service, and then have the evening free.  Try it!

Monday, we have a Confirmation Retreat for our students who will be confirmed this year.  Confirmation will be May 2nd.  The retreat is MANDATORY for those who wish to be confirmed.  It will be held in the parish center, and is conducted by a team who specializes in these retreats from St. Louis.  Parents, make sure your child attends.

Thursday is our March Red Cross Blood Drive for the Mascoutah Community.  It begins at 2 P.M. and continues to 7 P.M.  If you can give blood, please come because someone is depending on your gift of blood to live.  It is almost like donating an organ to a person who needs one.  Much simpler, less painful, and you can do it many, many times!  Even if you have high blood pressure, or diabetes, you can give blood if you are not on blood-thinners.  We will have pizzas from PIZZA HUT in the food department, along with the other assortments of home baked cookies, pretzels, raisins, and juice.  Babysitting will be available at school also.  The “Make-Up” drive is Saturday, March 15, from 9-2.

I continue to ask your prayers for all of the sick, and for all of our doctors and healthcare workers who take care of the sick.  I often have people asking me to pray for them, or for their surgery, for good results and a speedy recovery.  I ask them if they ever pray for their doctors who are taking care of them.  Why not?  We really depend on their wisdom, skills & diagnosis to prescribe the right remedies and procedures, do we not?  They all need our prayers, like the human body needs all of its parts to work together.  By the way, say a prayer for me that my right eye, which has been a problem, gets better. Pray for my doctor in this regard also.

Don’t forget your help (pledge) to the Catholic Ministry and Services Appeal!  Be a part of this life and soul saving program in our Diocese.  Are you one of the 253 donors needed from our parish?  This is continuation of the heritage we have received.

Please pray for all of the sick, and for their doctors and health care persons who work to bring them back to health.  Pray for those who have been hurt by violence and war.  Pray for peace, and the justice that is necessary to bring peace and healing and forgiveness.  We may not have been touched so far.  That is no assurance that it cannot happen to us.  Do unto others as you have them do for you!

Lenten Project

PSR will be collecting dry goods for the Food Pantry as a Lenten service project. The 8th grade will be heading up this project and will be  responsible for collecting and assigning items to each grade. The food pantry is in need of paper towels, tooth paste & brushes, dish soap, face soap, toilet paper, lotion, shampoo, etc. PSR will be collecting these items during the six weeks of Lent. Thank you for your help.

DIOCESE OF BELLEVILLE

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Each year the Lord Jesus calls the entire Church to a special season of penance and renewal. As we begin this holy time of Lent, we should reflect on our need for conversion of heart, prayer, charitable works and penance.

The season of Lent extends this year from Ash Wednesday, February 21, to the Mass of the Lord's Supper, April 6 inclusive.

  1. 1. All Catholics who are 14 years of age and older are to observe the penitential practice of abstinence which consists of refraining from the consumption of meat. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

  2. 2. In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting.

  3. 3. On days of fasting and abstinence, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

  4. 4. If a person is unable to observe the above regulation due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

  5. 5. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices.

  6. 6. To completely disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

  7. 7. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.

  News IN OUR PARISH

LAST CHANCE    We will have the last of our Soup Supper & Speaker Series on this coming Monday, March 3rd. Our guest speaker will be Msgr. William Hitpas, pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in O'Fallon. He is well-know to many of the people in our parish and an excellent speaker. Please plan to attend and bring a friend. Soup will be served at 6:30 pm and Msgr. Hitpas will speak beginning at 7:00 pm.

HCCCW QUILTERS will be carpooling; Monday, March 3rd to the Lively Grove Quilters annual Quilting Bee and Luncheon held at the St. Anthony parish center from 9 am to 4 pm. "All you can eat" turkey dinner will be served.  If you'd like to join them, meet on the east side of the parish center at 8 AM. They are hoping to have as many quilters as possible attend as two Lively Grove women have been faithful in helping HCCCW quilters as often as they can. More information call Ruth Wilhelm 566-2885.

ATTENTION ALTAR SERVERS   There will be a training session for the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil services. The training will be held at 10:00 am on Holy Thursday, March 20th. If you are not able to attend the training please call Mrs. Schneider at 566-2871 or Mr. Grawitch at 566-4319. Training session will take approximately one hour.

Calling all men!    The 2008 Catholic Men for Christ conference for the Archdiocese of St. Louis will take place on Saturday, March 15th and will feature dynamic speakers, including Richard Lane and Deacon Alex Jones.  The church has chartered a bus to go to and from the conference.  The conference is open to all men high school aged and older, and if fathers bring their sons, the sons get in free!  Approximately 35 men from the parish have registered so far and we have room for about 20 more.  Our next registration deadline is March 9th. Please contact Bill Huff, 566-4357, George Harne, 566-9362, or Tom Norrenberns, 566-8531.  For more details, you can also visit www.catholicmenforchrist.com.

CFL MEETING    A meeting of the Catholic Fraternal Life Council 24 members will be held Monday, March 3rd at 7:30 PM in the Holy Childhood School cafeteria.

EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS    Now is the time to send in your request for Easter Flower memorials for your deceased loved ones. For $10 you can list one or two individual names or one or two family names. The Holy Childhood Council of Catholic Women (HCCCW) is sponsoring this program. The money is used for the purchasing of the Easter flowers and any other items needed for the altar. For your convenience, there is an Easter Flower envelope (dated March 2) in your church envelopes or use a white envelope and address it to HCCCW Easter Flowers. Make sure you list who the memorial is for and the donor's name on the envelope. Please make checks payable to HCCCW. Donations are needed by March 19th, to insure your loved one's names are included on the list displayed at all entrances to the church. For more information contact Pat Bowker 566-7089.

HCCCW    Norbert Zinck, a Holy Childhood graduate, will speak at the HCCCW meeting on March 11th at 7:00 PM. He has some interesting tales of his travels since his school days.

HC BOOK CLUB    For a great Lenten read join us on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 in the parish center as we discuss The Day Christ Died by Jim Bishop.  It's an inspiring classic on the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.  It opens at 6 pm--the beginning of the Hebrew day--with Jesus and 10 apostles enroute to Jerusalem and the Last Supper.  It closes at 4 pm of the following afternoon, when Jesus was taken down from the cross.  Several copies are available through the library system; if you would like one contact Susan Anderson at 746-4775.

AN INVITATION TO PRAYER    Recently, a number of families in the parish have been getting together to pray the rosary. This usually takes about twenty minutes and then we have some snacks while the children play. It's been good for the children as well as the adults. We would love to have more families join us. (We have "cheat sheets" with the prayers and can share some of our extra rosaries.) To find out more about where we will be meeting next and when, email Tiffany Wright at tiff_wright75@yahoo.com.

ATTENTION FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES coming up March 8-9, there will be a Quest experience held at St. Dominic parish in Breese, IL. For more information/application contact Ron Hulliung or Kathy Renth.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"Could you not then watch one hour with me?"

"The Eucharist is one of the most tangible ways God is present in our world today.

If confusion or loneliness weights too heavily on our hearts, if we struggle with meaninglessness,

if we long to step off life's frantic treadmill and slow down to ponder the direction of our lives

 - Jesus invites us, "Come to Me."

The blessed Sacrament is exposed every Tuesday following the 8 o'clock Mass until 7 PM and on Saturdays from 9-10 AM.

Come spend any amount of time you can give with our Lord as He waits patiently for us.

If you have  questions, please call Mary Ellen Mueller 566-9529

Wayne Miller/Mary Hirl Scholarship

2008

Monies have been donated to Holy Childhood School in memory of Wayne Miller and Mary Hirl. The funds have been combined and invested in the Catholic Community Foundation with the Diocese of Belleville (approximately $12,000 at this time). Interest earned on the account will be used to provide two scholarships. One scholarship will be given to a family who has a child in K-4 and one scholarship to another family who has a child in 5-8. The scholarships will be awarded based on need.

Guidelines: the amount of monies awarded for the scholarships will be determined by the amount of interest earned and the decision by the School Board. Part or all of the interest may be awarded. Any amount not awarded will be invested back into the corpus of the scholarship fund.

The students who receive the scholarships will be determined by the information provided by TASS and the application for scholarship funds. The determination of the recipients will be done by the tuition committee. Only the recipients, scholarship committee and school board will know who receives the awards. Only one award will be granted to a family each year.

Any family who pays less in tuition than the award amount will be ineligible for the award. Forms will be given out to all those who complete a TASS application.

The first award will be two - $200 awards for the 2008-2009 school year. This will be the first year of the award. It will be a yearly award.
