FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH On Wednesday, David Haas of our parish passed away at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. David has been in the hospital for about the last three months fighting an infection that started in his leg, and eventually took his life. David has also been fighting cancer over the past four years. He put up a great battle. He was a great patient, according to the hospital staff that worked with him. He was a faithful member of the parish and a good Catholic. We pray for him and for his family. May he rest in peace!
This past Monday, we also laid to rest Norman Siegel. Ironically, the family had a family reunion planned for last Sunday. Norman died Friday morning. The family celebrated the life of Norman and his family after the funeral Mass on Monday. Norman was a very good person, a great example to his children, and a devoted spouse and caretaker of his wife, Cecelia. He was a devout member of our parish, and a great person. We pray for him and for his family. May he rest in peace!
Many thanks to all who make the special effort to come to Rosary and Benediction on the Tuesdays of October. Your prayers are so needed for the good of our families, our parish, and our country. I know that we all are busy and have many things to do. But we must also take time to pray, to do the extra special part of our faith if we expect to receive the extras that we ask from our God. We are not doing God a favor, but we are making ourselves open to receive the blessings that we need.
The eye surgery went well. Thank you for all of your prayers. When we talk about percentages we hope that we are on the positive side of the figures. But we are also aware that some, and many, are not so lucky. God was good to me, and I hope this will help me to see better.
We are often asked to announce some fund-raiser, and that members will be available after Mass to accept support from those present at the Mass. Of late, members of the group promoting the fund-raiser are not there to sell tickets or whatever they are selling. You need to keep your word - your commitment - if you want the continued support of the people. When you are not there, you damage your image and also the importance of your program.
With the economy of our country, and in many of our homes being challenged, the same applies to our school and parish. We need to view our school, our gym, our church, all of our property as we would view our own homes. Turning off lights, or only using the ones that we really need, closing of doors and not wasting energy is as important to our utility bills as it is to yours. We have to pay for the wasted energy. Please help by being conservation minded in regards to our parish utility expenses. There are no freebies—someone has to pay the bill!
Flu shots Holy Childhood will once again offer an opportunity to receive an annual flu shot. The clinic will be held on October 22nd from 9 AM to 1 PM in our parish center. Cost for the shot is $24.99. For reservations please call the rectory.

World Priest Day Next Sunday, October 26th is the celebration of World Priest Day. World Priest Day is a celebration and affirmation of the men who commit their lives to the Lord and the Church via the Sacrament of Holy Orders. It is an opportunity for Catholic parishioners to thank, affirm and share their love and support for our priests. It is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter. It is being celebrated concurrently with Priesthood Sunday sponsored by Serra Club. Take a moment next Sunday to say thank you to the priest of our parish. We invite all of you to join in the celebration of affirming the men who faithfully serve as our beloved priests. Let them know how important they are to our parish and to our journey to be in relationship with God.
Pro life activities On October 26th: Respect Life Convention, hosted by the Archdiocese of St. Louis. For more information call 314-792-7555.
OCTOBER: MONTH OF THE ROSARY Rev. Matthew R. Marriello The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7th. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. The feast was introduced by Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572) in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The pope attributed more to the "arms" of the Rosary than the power of cannons and the valor of the soldiers who fought there. Legend tells us that the Rosary as a form of prayer was given to St. Dominic (1170- 1221) by Mary, the Mother of Our Lord, who entrusted it to him as an aid in the conflicts with the Albigensians. The Dominican pope, St. Pius V, did much to further the spread of the Rosary and it thereafter became one of the most popular devotions in Christendom. It was the same Pope St. Pius V, who in 1569 officially approved the Rosary in its present form with the Papal Bull, CONSUEVERUNT ROMANI PONTIFICES. It had been completed by the addition of the second half of the "Hail Mary" and the "Glory be to the Father" at the conclusion of each mystery. Current scholarship traces the development of the Rosary to the High Middle Ages where it came into being in various medieval monasteries as a substitute for the Divine Office for the lay monks and devout lay persons who did not know how to read. Instead of the 150 psalms, they would pray 150 "Our Fathers" counting them on a ring of beads known as the crown or "corona." With the growth of popularity of Marian devotion in the twelfth century, the "Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary" developed now substituting 150 "Hail Marys" in place of the "Our Fathers." The 150 "Hail Marys" were subsequently subdivided into 15 decades by the young Dominican friar, Henry Kalkar (1328-1408), with each decade referring to an event in the life of Jesus and Mary. The Dominican, Alanus de Rupe (1428-1478) further divided the episodes in the history of salvation into the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries. He also attributed the origin of the Rosary, then known as the "Psalter of the Blessed Virgin" to St. Dominic and thus spurred the Dominican Order to make the Apostolate of the Rosary their special concern. The Dominicans have, since then, promulgated the Rosary with notable results. In this month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation.

“They sang and looked like Angels.” On Sunday October 12 the Holy Childhood Children’s Choir sang at the 10:30 Mass at St. Joseph in Lebanon. The above compliment was said to me at the end of Mass. What a great compliment! My thanks to the Children’s Choir, Dr. Gibson, and the parents who brought their children. The Mass was followed by a carnival and lunch. Parents, you should be very proud of the hard work and gifts of your children. They were great.
