FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

This weekend, we celebrate the Sacrament of First Communion for the second-grade students of our parish.  This celebration will take place at a 2 P.M. mass on Sunday.  We congratulate the children on this first sacrament since their Baptism, one that they can actively participate in, and know what is happening.  We hope that the awareness of receiving Jesus through this sacrament will energize their lives and their faith to be the best person they can be, and the person God wants them to be.  For the parents, we hope that you will be the leader in bringing them to Christ and Mass.

In the April 16th issue of the Messenger and thought it might be a great prayer for us, at some point in our lives.

A CAREGIVER’S PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, help me better understand and believe I can do what you ask me to do.

Forgive me for the times, even now, when I question your judgment.

As I go about the many daily tasks of care-giving, give me energy.

As I watch my loved ones oh-so-slowly walk across the room, give me strength.

As I answer his/her repeated question just one more time, give me patience.

As I look for solutions to whatever is the most recent concern, give me wisdom.

As I reminisce with him/her about the “good old days," give me a moment of laughter.

As I get to know my loved one in a new way, seeing both his/her strength and frailty, give me joy.

As I sit beside my loved one’s bed waiting for his/her pain medication to take effect, give me comfort.

Lighten my burden, answer my prayer and give me the strength to do what seems impossible.

Give me a quiet place to rest when I need it and quieting of my anxieties when I’m there.

Change my attitude from a tired, frustrated and angry caregiver to the loving and compassionate one I want to be.

Remain my constant companion as I face the challenges of care-giving.

And when my job is through and it’s time for me to let go,

help me remember he/she is leaving my loving arms to enter your eternal embrace.

 Amen.

Fortunately, we do not know what the future holds for us just as they did not know what the future held for them.  Be assured that, if they had their way, they would not be in the condition of need that they are in.  It could well happen to any one of us down the road.  Pray for the one who needs the caregiver and pray also for the caregiver!

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered by the Bishop here on May 8th.  Pray for all those receiving this Sacrament and their families.

Thanks to all who supported the Catholic Home Missions Appeal this weekend.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"The Most Blessed Sacrament is the memorial of Divine Love.

Our Lord did something infinitely great when He gave Himself wholly to us

through His living and personal presence in the adorable Eucharist.

Our Savior could not possibly have given us a greater, a more tender and a more ardent proof of love."

(The Holy Eucharist For All, Fr. Lulas Etlin, O.S.B.)

Jesus Himself, invites us to frequently approach and

draw from the fountain of graces available in the Blessed  Sacrament.

Eucharistic Adoration is available at Holy Childhood

on Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM, and on Saturday, 9-10 AM.

 If you feel you can offer a specific hour in adoration on Tuesday, call Mary Ellen Mueller, 566-9529;

otherwise, just come and spend any amount of time you can with Our Lord.

                                      NEWS AROUND TOWN

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER: Like in the gospel today, sometimes our eyes need to be opened to know what God has done for us, and what he wants for us in our marriage. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend in this area is June 26th through 28th.  Early registration is highly recommended. To register or for more information call 888-889-9963.

FOOD PANTRY: The Concerned Christians would like to provide the opportunity for the entire community to participate in the move. We believe that moving the food pantry from the old location to the new would be a great opportunity to get the town involved. We plan on having a "bucket brigade" style transfer. The effort will require 300 people; the community has planned for Saturday, May 2, beginning at 2 PM. In the event of inclement weather the "bucket brigade" will be cancelled. In order to participate in this unique effort, please contact Chris von der Linden at 618-409-1592.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL: Throughout the month of April we will be collecting recipes for our Council Cookbook. We are looking for a volunteer to help us with cookbook sales! The deadline for the recipes is April 30th. If you would like to help, please contact Pat at 618-799-8505. All proceeds will benefit the charitable works of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

MATER DEI MEGA RAFFLE sponsored by the Mater Dei Fathers and friends and the Office of Institutional Advancement. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Mater Dei Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 6th. To purchase tickets, please call the office at 618-526-7216.

ST. AUGUSTINE HOLY NAME is having a Mother's Day Breakfast on Sunday, May 10 from 8 AM until Noon. It will take place at the St. Augustine Parish Center in Breese, IL.

KING'S HOUSE RETREAT & RENEWAL CENTER: There will be Retreats in June and July for Men and Women. For more information, please contact the King's House at 618-397-0584.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES: The Belleville Region of Catholic Social Services (CSS) is seeking nominations for the 19th Annual Christian Service Awards.  Individuals nominated should serve or live in the following counties:  Clinton, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair and Washington.  The awards will be presented at a benefit dinner on May 1, 2009, at 6 o’clock in the evening at Albert’s Banquet Center in Belleville.  Reservations for the event are $45 per person (or $320 for a table of eight) and can be made at any time by calling the Catholic Social Services office at (618) 394-5900.
