FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH This week, we again laid to rest a faithful member of the parish, Gertrude Moll. She was a very prayerful person, and blessed by God in His own special way. She had the blessing of a caring and supportive family. God is good, and loves all of us! We are His children, and He has a special place for each one of us in heaven. May we always be faithful and loyal to Him! May Gertrude enjoy the peace and blessings God has in store for her!
This is Memorial weekend, and the first holiday for the summer season. It is a day set aside nationally to remember those who have given their lives to defend our country. However, it is also a time to remember all those who have passed into eternity. We will have mass at 8:00 A.M. on Monday and invite you to come and pray with us for those who gave of themselves that we might enjoy the freedoms we delight in today.
On June 4th, there will be a Red Cross Blood Drive for the Mascoutah Community at Holy Childhood School, from 2 to 7 P.M. Please mark your calendars, and your memories to give blood on that day. This is the one product that cannot be manufactured, and is always in demand at the hospitals. Surgeries, accidents, cancer and related illnesses seem to keep the shelves at bare minimums in our hospitals, barring any emergencies or major surgeries. This is why we have Blood Drives—so that there will always be a ready supply for those persons who unfortunately need blood to get well or survive. Again, I ask you to give blood if you can, or at least to encourage someone to take your place at the Blood Drive. The Make-Up Drive will be on Saturday, June 13th, from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M.
We thank all those who have supported our parish financially throughout the first part of this year. We struggle at this time of the year to meet the needs of our school. We also struggle to meet the bills of the parish and the assessments that are part of all parish operations, as well as paying off our loan. The school struggles when tuitions are not paid on time, or in arrears. We have to pay salaries, health benefits, retirement, Social Security, and all those other benefits on our employees. And we have to pay utilities and other regular expenses. That is why we need the support of all of our parishioners to share the burden. We are grateful to all those who do their share and more. We ask those who are remiss in this regard to step up and pull your share of the burden. It is called STEWARDSHIP of the blessings that God gives to us!
Norbert Meier, the choir director at Zion Lutheran Church, is celebrating 50 years as director. He has also directed many Community choir events and school bands over the same period. There is a special service at Zion to honor him at 4:00 P.M. this afternoon. All are welcome to attend this celebration in his honor.
Wednesday will be my anniversary of ordination, May 27, 1958—61 years now and still counting. Come and celebrate mass with me and the school children. God is good! FOOD PANTRY BUILDING COLLECTION: This week we will have our second collection to help pay for the renovation of the Food Pantry, which is also Shepherd Sunday. Checks should be made payable to Holy Childhood; memo: Food Pantry Building. Groceries and cash donations are also needed to maintain the food pantry for the needy. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Sometimes we limit God's help by telling Him how to help us and how to console us. It is arrogant to say to the Lord, 'Yes, I will allow you to console me, in this way, through this person, but not those people.' That is not the way to receive. Rather we should say, 'Lord I need your help. Please help me in the best way you can in the way you know is best for me.' Whatever it is we need we can offer it up to God and let Him work it out for us; let Him be our consolation, our source of hope; let Him give us strength and courage" (Hope for the Journey, Fr. Jack Spalding).
Our Lord is waiting for us in Eucharistic Adoration, held every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM and on Saturday from 9-10 AM.
