FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

Here we are at the end of June.  The days are already getting shorter as we move to the Winter Solstice (Dec. 20-24) when we have the shortest day of the year.  We celebrated the Feast of the Birth of John the Baptist this past Wednesday, arbitrarily set by the church, as John was the light preparing the way for Christ.  His work declines as Christ comes into the world (arbitrarily set at December 25), a new light, and the days start getting longer again.  Amazing, isn’t it?  However, we know that the year is almost half past, and we are looking forward to the end, in more ways than one.  We are also getting closer to school starting, Picnic, going away to College, and summer a memory.  Make good use of the time that God allots to us each day!

Curiosity!  A hopeful answer to a need!  Are there any talented persons who might want to play the piano or organ once a month?  We frequently need an extra pianist or organist to fill in our schedule, whether on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning.  If you can help us out, please contact Laura at the rectory!

Conservation!  I was informed by our custodial persons that the a/c in the gymnasium was running when they came to work Monday morning.   That means that a lot of cold air was produced and not utilized at a cost to the school utility bill, which comes back to the parish, which comes back to parishioner Sunday support.  You would not allow this to happen in your home.  Please care for our school and church facilities as you would your home.  We should not waste the treasures that God gives us.

Many thanks to all of our parishioners who volunteered at the Vacation Bible School this past week.  Thanks also to our leaders and coordinators who spent time preparing for this event along with St. John’s U.C.C. Church, and Bethel Methodist Church.  We thank St. John’s for hosting this event at their church.  Since we usually have the most children participating, we also share a greater portion of the expenses.  However, since our school is occupied with painting, cleaning, waxing, and whatever in preparation for the coming school year, we are not able to accommodate the event at Holy Childhood.

This coming week, I am going to try something new with Communion Calls at the Nursing Homes.  I am scheduling mass at 9:30 A.M. at the Estates at Silver Creek, and then mass at Mar-Ka at 10:30 or so, both on Thursday morning.  These will be after our parish mass.  On Friday, I will have mass at the Grange at 10:00 A.M.  I will have the Anointing of the Sick and Elderly at these events.  I take Communion to these places anyway on the first week of the month.  If anyone wants to come and help with these events, please let me know, or meet me there.

Please continue to pray for Vocations, and for the sick.

Have a happy Fourth of July this coming weekend.  Drive carefully, and play safe!

 FOOD PANTRY BUILDING COLLECTION:

The fourth Sunday of the month, we will have our second collection to help pay for the renovation of the Food Pantry, which is also Shepherd Sunday. Checks should be made payable to Holy Childhood; memo: Food Pantry Building. Groceries and cash donations are also needed to maintain the food pantry for the needy. Money collected for the supplies will be kept separate from the building renovation fund.

  IN OUR PARISH

GIFT CARDS: Purchase Gift Cards at face value for everyday purchases or to give as gifts. HCS receives a percentage back on every gift card purchased. We have restaurant, gas, retail and local stores available. Stop by the gathering space after every mass to purchase your cards.

CHURCH PICNIC NEWS: You will be able to pick up baskets/containers at all entrances on the weekend of July 4th. The baskets need to be filled with $15 - $20 gift items and returned by August 12th. If you have any ideas or questions about the picnic, please contact the rectory at 566-2958 or email us at: holychildhoodchurch@cbnstl.com.

PARISH PICNIC QUILTS: We have already purchased some quilts for the picnic, but are still in need of donations for the purchasing of more!  If you are not in with a group you can just send in a donation to keep purchasing quilts. Thank you.

SONROCK KIDS CAMP VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: was a HUGE success this past week! All of the 234 kids present had a great time as they were accepted by Jesus, protected by Jesus, saved by Jesus, forgiven by Jesus, and living for Jesus! Holy Childhood was well represented with almost half of the children who were in attendance coming from our parish! And a huge thanks to all of the Holy Childhood volunteers; well over 40 of you, who gave so graciously of your time and talent! It was greatly appreciated! Thanks again VBS attendees and helpers for opening your minds and hearts to SonRock Kids Camp this year! See you next summer!

Judy Schneider, HC Parish VBS Coordinator.

SCOUTS YARD SALE DONATION ITEMS: The church sponsored Boy Scout Troop will conduct their annual yard sale; at the church parking lot on July 11th. There are several ways you can help! You can donate items to the yard sale, you can sell your own items at a $10 rented table space in the parking lot; and lastly, you can buy something at the sale. If you would like to have your donated items picked up, please call Jim Cornman at 566-0355 or 618-960-9049. Thank you for your support!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

As the Blessed Virgin once said,

'The most important thing in the spiritual life is to ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit comes, then peace will be established.

Pray to the Holy Spirit for enlightenment.

Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your souls,

to renew the entire world.

Raise your hands, yearn for Jesus

because in His Resurrection He wants to fill you with graces'."

Come join us Tuesdays  following mass until 7:00 PM and Saturday 9-10 AM.

If you would like to commit to a specific hour to pray on Tuesdays

please call Mary Ellen Mueller at 566-9529.

Principal:  Mr. Ron Karcher:  476-3505
School Office: 566-2922

Dear Families,

Just a reminder that the school office is open on Tuesday thru Friday 9am-noon. If you wish to talk to me, you can call 566-2922 or my home phone 476-3505.

I want to introduce our new sixth grade teacher, Ms. Kelli Hawkins.  Ms. Hawkins is a graduate of St. Louis University with a concentration in English. She has taught one year in St. Louis Public Schools. She received a scholarship to St. Louis University through the diocese to promote minorities in the teaching field. I believe she will be a great addition to Holy Childhood School. She is excited and is doing all the paperwork, fingerprinting and attending a workshop on the Shurley method. Welcome Ms. Hawkins.

In European towns years ago there were wooden walls to protect the towns. In one town there appeared round targets on the walls with an arrow in the center. People got very curious as to who was the great marksman. Finally the town mayor caught the person and it was a 12 year old boy. He was astounded how on target the boy was so he asked him how he came to be so accurate. The boy replied that he shot the arrow first and then drew the target around it. He was always on target.

Those who are running the Vacation Bible School are on target.  Summer is not a vacation from Church or God. We should always be on target and make our faith important during the summer.  It could be too late if we are not on target.

I will be on vacation July 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9th. Mrs. Fohne will be in the office on Fridays. I pray that you have a safe summer.

Sincerely,

Deacon Ron Karcher

Principal
