FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH
It is Picnic week! All of the planning over the past year, and the feverish workings of the past months all come to culmination this week. And the parish is grateful to all of those who have dedicated their time, their wisdom, and their labor to make this coming picnic a success. However, we still need the help of all those who were not directly involved with their physical presence. We need the prayers of all of our parish family, from the youngest who can say a prayer to the oldest who can do the same. We need your prayers for good weather, for great cooperation, and strong dedication to make this the best picnic that Holy Childhood Parish has ever had.
On Monday at 6:00 p.m., we begin setting up the stands. We need lots of hand to move materials—boards and metal stands from the truck to the proper place on the grounds. This is a place where our young people can gain service time for Confirmation needs. It is also a time for young and old to work together in building a better and more caring family by being there to help set up. Moms and Dads, bring your children so that they can “learn the ropes” and take your places down the road. Although Monday may be the “big” night in setting up, and the most noticeable, we will be “fine-tuning” the other nights of the week, or completing the job—lights, trash-barrels, picnic tables, etc. We need help each night of this coming week and that means many more than two or three people.
Saturday morning and afternoon are the “crunch times” when the stands are stocked, signs are put up, supplies are brought in and distributed, bingo supplies brought up from the school basement, covers are put on stands, etc. We need older leaders and younger helpers! Picnic is a big operation and a lot of work. But it means so much for the parish family both financially as well as socially, and spiritually—living our faith!
FRIDAY EVENING! A new addition to our picnic—a fish fry with several bands playing a variety of music. Hopefully, this will be a huge success in helping the bottom line on our picnic, and bringing our parish and community together for food and fun. Come and bring your friends! And then plan to come back Saturday for bingo, chicken dinners, games and all of the traditional items that the Holy Childhood Picnic is known for.
THURSDAY: COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE FROM 2 TO 7 P.M. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, in their Fellowship Hall. We “goofed” on scheduling this drive and our picnic keeps us from having it here at Holy Childhood. Please go there and give blood and save some lives. Blood drives have been down all summer, and there is a definite shortage. Show that you and our community do care, and wants to share the blessings of health that we have received. We had the two pecan trees between the church and the rectory trimmed this week. There were a lot of dead limbs in them, and the one by the breezeway was a threat to the roof on church as well as the breezeway. At the same time, they cleaned out the gutters of church of the leaves, nuts, and other debris that had accumulated over the past couple of years, which caused the rain water to overflow and run down the walls of church.
Please continue to pray for the sick, especially for the elderly and those with terminal illnesses—cancer. There are several in our parish who direly need prayers.
GIFT CARDS: Kohl’s gift cards purchased through the school can be used to make payments on your Kohl’s credit card. We have $25 cards in stock.
