FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH
November is the month of the saints in heaven and in purgatory! Thanks to all who made the special effort to come to mass last Monday in honor of All Saints Day and for All Souls Day on Tuesday! The School Children had a very nice presentation after the 8:00 a.m. mass about many saints in our church. We count on the example of the saints and also their prayers to guide us in our daily lives.
Thursday is Veteran’s Day. Don’t forget to say an extra prayer for all those veterans who gave of their lives to save our country. Pray also for all of those who still suffer from injuries, both physical and emotional, (battle scars) from their military commitments. Pray also for all of our troops who are deployed throughout the world, and for their families.
Next weekend, we will have a second collection for THE CARE OF OUR PARISH CEMETERY. We started this last year, since the cost of maintaining our cemetery, as well as making improvements, exceed the return on our investments. As we all know the stock market, as well as the whole financial scene has challenged all who depended on returns from their investments. We recognized this last year, and at that time, decided to begin a “second collection” on one Sunday during November for the purpose of helping take care of the cemetery. Please help us in this endeavor by making your check, or envelope with gift, to Holy Childhood Parish Cemetery Fund. In addition, the Knights of Columbus are having a breakfast next Sunday after the 8 and 10:30 mass to benefit our cemetery. Please patronize them, and bless their efforts.
We want to thank the Knights of Columbus who have been doing some great work in the cemetery the past years. They repainted the Crucifixion statues and altar, and revamped the concrete area around the altar. The gentleman who takes care of the roses at the Cathedral, Mr. Bossier, is responsible for the rose bushes and the other plants that enhance the crucifixion group. He supplied all of the plants on his own, comes and waters them, and promised to take care of them. They sure add beauty to the area. We also want to thank Robert Anstedt for taking care of the mowing and trimming in our two cemeteries. One of these days, we will have to have a “cemetery work day” to straighten up some leaning monuments, and some sinking ones. It is a constant care to fill in where the soil sinks in around the vaults, or time takes its toll.
We gave back to the Lord another member of parish in the person of Marie Hommel. She was 95 years old, and has been a resident at the Mar-Ka Nursing Home for the past many years. She was a faith-filled person! May she rest in peace!
I am hoping to go to Iowa the latter part of this week. It will probably be the last time this year as we move into the holiday season, and life gets hectic. My brother is now in an “assisted living” residence next to the nursing home where his wife lives. He is doing much better now from all reports. His wife is sleeping most of time, probably from the medicines they are giving her for the cancer. We do not know what is ahead of us! Pray for the grace to meet the challenges God has in store for each one of us!

The “Book of Remembrance” is on the podium in front of the church during the month of November for you to list those persons you want to remember in our masses and prayers.

Dear Parents & Friends, This is a very busy time. November 11 is Veteran’s Day. On November 12th we will celebrate veterans at the 8:00 a.m. Mass. “It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken away.” Dick Cheney.
I think we forget that our country fought a Revolutionary War to have freedom. Today, we still have the same freedoms. We can thank those who have served in the military during the Revolutionary War, and in the many wars that have followed. War is not pretty, or well defined, not always thought out, yet we have freedom. Thank you veterans!!! We love freedom. Freedom and choice does not mean we can do anything we want. There are responsibilities, yet many people have forgotten that. Freedom to worship does not mean you can choose not to go to church, to pray. Our spiritual life is as important as anything. Freedom does not mean we can shout anything, write anything, do anything we wish. We have responsibilities to be Christian to each other, to be civil, to respect. There seems to be so much anger yet some people hide under the word ‘freedom’. Freedom does not mean we let the government do everything. We are responsible to help. The 7th grade collected items for the Food Pantry. In November, the Edge is collecting men’s clothing for Gear Up during Advent. The school will be accepting baby wipes, baby oil & shampoo for the Pregnancy Care Center. Our goal is 200 and I believe we will exceed that. The center is in dire need of baby wipes. Freedom means responsibility. God bless you as we bring God into our families by action and word.
Sincerely, Deacon Ron Karcher, Principal

Veterans Day: A Special Presentation” on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 PM. We invite all the military veterans in our parish and their families to a special showing of the film “The Miracle of Father Kapaun” in the Cathedral Undercroft. One of the most inspiring heroes of the Korean War—this military chaplain is on the road to sainthood. The story of his heroic work as a chaplain during battle, and his leadership and comfort to fellow American prisoners after capture and torture by the Communists. This imprisonment under incredibly harsh conditions ultimately led to his death at 35 years of age in 1951. A man of incredible courage and faith, he is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of prisoners, instilling them with hope when all hope seemed lost.
