FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH
This past week, we laid to rest two more members of our parish, in the persons of Jeanette Voegele and Bonnie Kohrmann. Both have been battling serious illnesses over the past months, and in both cases, terminal. They are both in God’s kingdom and are enjoying the fruits of their labors. May they rest in peace! Pray for them, and pray for their families left behind here on earth. They too, have struggled and suffered deeply.
This Sunday evening, November 21, we have the Community Thanksgiving Service, sponsored by the Mascoutah Ministerial Association. It will be at 6:00 P.M. at St. Martin of Tours Lutheran Church. Fr. Abraham will be delivering the homily. We are all invited to attend and celebrate Thanksgiving with community prayer and singing with our fellow churches.
Tuesday, we will have mass at 8:00 A.M. However, it is also Special Person’s Day at school and we will be having a mass at 10:30 A.M. to honor them. Then they will be having lunch together over in the cafeteria. Come, join us in celebrating God’s gifts to us in the presence of one another.
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, and we will have our parish mass at 9:00 A.M. The entire parish is invited to come and thank God as a grateful family at this mass. We need to recognize all of our blessings and realize that these are all gifts to us from a loving God. We do not add or subtract from God’s happiness or perfection by what we do. God is perfect by his very nature. However, we can help or hurt ourselves by not allowing God to bless us with His grace and goodness when we choose, or not choose, to come to Him and make room for Him in our lives. We all have free will and are responsible for loving or not loving our God. Come and give thanks to God for His love and blessings.
Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. That means that Christmas is about four weeks away. We celebrate Advent, “His Coming,” and are asked to prepare ourselves by prayer and good works for Christmas. Again, it is a time to clean up our lives for the coming of Christ both today and in eternity. We never know the time this will happen, both for our own lives and for the final day. The whole story is to be ready whenever God call us. Next Sunday we begin the decorating of church at about 1:00 P.M. Again we can use many young hands and feet to bring up the decorations and banners from the basement, from the attic of church, and from the rectory. It is a good time for our eighth grade Confirmation students to get in some service hours.
Last Sunday’s special collection for the cemetery brought in $1648.25. We are thankful to all who donated to this special cause. If anyone still wants to help out with their gift, you can still deposit it in the collection basket in an envelope designated “Cemetery”. I am sure the Knights of Columbus are grateful for the patronage that you rendered to them at their breakfast last Sunday. I heard that they ran out of food, except for a few items. The parish also thanks you for your support of this endeavor that helps the cemetery.
Again, you are asked to remember all of the sick of our parish, our family, and our friends, and the elderly members of our parish. They need our prayers, and we need theirs.
2011 envelopes are ready to be picked up in the breeze way. The Little blue books may be picked up at all entrances of the church.
The “Book of Remembrance” is on the podium in front of the church during the month of November for you to list those persons you want to remember in our masses and prayers.
The Holy Childhood Dinner Auction Committee would like to thank everyone who supported our auction through their donations and prayers. With your help, we were able to raise over $61,000 for the support of Holy Childhood School. God Bless You! The Dinner Auction Committee

Dear Parents & Friends, We are getting close to Thanksgiving Day. It is a good time to sit down, kneel or just walk around and to give thanks for the many gifts we have received. If you have a family celebration, that is great!!! There are many traditions that come with Thanksgiving. Getting together is great and food seems to be an important part of the season. For my family, Thanksgiving always included prayer and these favorite foods: Baked Turkey (I love the white meat), now also smoked Cranberry Sauce shaped like a can (For many years I didn’t even know what a cranberry looked like) Mashed potatoes and gravy (real potatoes with lumps) Mashed potatoes and gravy (real potatoes with lumps) Dressing (never enough) Sweet potatoes with melted marshmallows on top Corn (frozen during the summer) Green beans and carrots Mincemeat pie, plus pecan, apple, peach, pumpkin Herring and many other things
Food has a way of bringing people together, not only is it good, it is also a time to pray and give thanks to God. Not only do we give thanks, we can share stories, laugh and enjoy family. This Thanksgiving we also offer our prayers for those who do not have families and those who are in the military fighting for our country. Family is important and Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to say thanks to God. Thank you for all you do for Holy Childhood Catholic School. 150 years and going strong.
God bless you,
Deacon Ron Karcher Principal

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Belleville Council, desperately needs help with a new program – Beds for Kids. Many people who come for help have babies and children sleeping on the floor. While St. Vincent de Paul has purchased beds for many, the demand is simple, too great. If you, a family member or friend have a crib, toddler bed, twin or full-size bed (frame, mattress/box springs) you no longer need, please consider donating it to St. Vincent de Paul. Call 618-271-6230 for pick-up. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.
