FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I know that I am a day late, but it probably is the first time that I have had the chance to wish you this greeting. And I hope that it will be a very good year for all of you spiritually speaking, and in all of the other ways. I hope that you had a good Christmas vacation or whatever you want to call the days between Christmas and New Year. Unfortunately for myself, I caught a bug before Christmas that slowed me down before and during Christmas, and kept me in the house all of this past week. I am not sure what will be happening this coming week, even though I am supposed to be on retreat at the King’s House. As I write this column, I am taking a flock of meds trying to stave-off getting worse and ending up in the hospital. I had the best of intentions to take communion to many of the “shut-ins” before and on Christmas, but did not want to risk passing on the bug I had to others. My apologies to all of those that I stood up. I just could not get rid of all of that meanness from last year and it hit me with a vengeance at the end of the year.
That being the case, I am not sure I will be taking communion to the nursing homes on January 13th & 14th. Fr. Abraham has been doing that for the past two months, and since he is home in Nigeria, I hope that I will be able to do it. Time will tell!
Fr. Abraham arrived in Nigeria on December 29th. He called me at 6:00 A.M. to tell me that he got home, and had been delayed in Germany due to the weather conditions. He asked me to pass on his greeting to all.
Next Saturday, at 9:00 A.M., we will have our quarterly Mass of the Anointing of the Sick. We invite all who are 65 or over, or with a serious illness, to come and receive this sacrament. The nature of the sacrament is for HEALING, not sending one off into eternity, as many used to refer to it as the “Last Anointing.” It gives us physical and spiritual strength, grace, God’s presence and help in our lives!
Our Red Cross “Make Up” drive will be this coming Saturday in the School Cafeteria from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. For those who could not make it to the drive Thursday that you will please do your best to come this Saturday to save a life. We will be open until 2 P.M., but don’t wait till the last moment.
Many thanks for your generous gifts to the parish in the Christmas Collection. I assure you, it all goes to pay the bills and operating costs. For those of you who do not support the parish regularly, please consider your gift to the parish as representing your appreciation to God for all the good gifts He has given you, and the blessings you enjoy. I doubt if any one of us would want to be considered ungrateful for our blessings.
Again, we have returned to God a member of our parish, and one of his devoted servants in the person of Marian Pollmann. She had been ill for a long time. Marian was a great person of faith, and a cheerful person to be around, and supporter of the parish. May she receive the just reward that she deserves for her goodness!
*If you know of anyone who is unable to attend mass and would like to have communion brought to them, please call the rectory, 566-2958.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
We need to go to the Lord first, continually and last. When we are sad, He is our consolation. When we have no joy, He brings us hope. When we are weak, He is our strength. When we are frightened, He is our courage. He heals us when we need to be healed, and fills us with all that we need, when we go to Him. He will not impose His will upon us. We decide, ourselves, whether or not to be open to the Lord and to all the incredible gifts He gives.
Visit Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM, and on Saturdays from 9-10 AM. If you would like to commit to a specific hour to pray on Tuesdays, please call Mary Ellen Mueller at 566-9529.

The Senior Center is in need of another person or persons to deliver meals on the east side of Mascoutah on Tuesdays. The lady who was doing it broke her shoulder, is 80, and decided to retire. She was from St. Martin of Tours and said that there probably wasn't anyone else at that church that was young enough or able enough to deliver any more. If anyone would like to volunteer to deliver meals on Tuesday, please call the Senior Center at 566-8758. Hopefully, more than one person could volunteer for this day so they wouldn’t have to do it every week. I’m sure the Senior Center would appreciate any help they can get. Thanks.
