FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

We now enter the third week of Lent, and with that the end of the month of March.  Time is flying!  I hope that this Lent is bringing you great satisfaction in the spiritual progress you are making.  I am grateful to all of you who have been coming to our morning masses, as well as the Lenten Mass on Wednesday and the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings.  Thank you for making the special sacrifices to come to these events!  Thanks also to all who attended the Soup-Speaker event last Monday evening.  Fr. Mauer was really wound-up, but had a very good talk.  Come this Monday for another great talk by another great speaker.  Check the Parish News in this bulletin for more information.

Friday is the first Friday of the month.  I will be making house-calls to bring Communion to shut-ins, God willing!  SATURDAY IS THE FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH, AND WE WILL HAVE THE “MASS OF ANOINTING” FOR ALL WHO ARE SICK OR OVER 65 YEARS OF AGE.  The Rite of Anointing of the Sick is for people who are sick or for those who are elderly to strengthen them or heal them so that they can continue to fulfill God’s plan for them.  It is not to say you are going to die then, or push you over the edge!  It is a Sacrament that gives grace, and brings Christ into our lives to help us in all ways.  Please come if you qualify!  Bring someone who could use these graces.

The Ministry of Prayer and Praise is still alive.  Members are asked to pray and offer sacrifices for the parish and the church as a whole.  The only commitment is to pray daily.  There are no meetings, dues, or evaluations.  Periodically, prayer intentions are mailed out.  We form a great body of holy people bringing prayers before our Lord.  Please join us!  Time commitments of a few minutes each day with no meeting to attend! Contact Pat Steinberg, 566-2245.

Many thanks to the Whittom, Wilhelm and Buehrle families of Pack 57, who came and cleaned around church last Saturday!  You did a great job, and church looks so much cleaner and nicer for your efforts.  Flowers next!

Many thanks to all who have responded to the CATHOLIC SERVICES AND MINISTRY APPEAL so far!  The first Sunday, 45 persons pledged $6404.  Last Sunday, 71 persons pledged $18,432.  This translates into 116 persons supporting the CSMA to the tune of $24,836.50.  Our goal is have 215 donors from our parish of over 600 families.  We can do it if we want to help our church fulfill its mission to ourselves and those who have special needs.  We save souls and bring Christ to others and ourselves by the gift we give to the CSMA.

The Blood Drive last Saturday did not reach goal, but darn near.  Goal was 30, and we had 28 persons to come in.  And all 28 were able to give blood—no deferrals.  And we also had five first-time donors.  I am sorry that more did not feel that giving blood was such a great gift of life.  And it did not cost anyone any money—just time and dedication.  The main drive on Thursday, the 10th, brought in 61 units of blood—our goal was 71!  And we had 71 persons to come and volunteer to give blood.  Many, many thanks to all who came to give blood!  You saved many lives by your love of your neighbor!

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Each year the Lord Jesus calls the entire Church to a special season of penance and renewal. As we begin this holy time of Lent, we should reflect on our need for conversion of heart, prayer, charitable works and Penance.

1. All Catholics who are 14 years of age and older are to observe the penitential practice of abstinence which consists of refraining from the consumption of meat. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

2. In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting.

3. On days of fasting and abstinence, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

4. If a person is unable to observe the above regulation due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

5. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices.

6. To completely disregard the law of fasting and abstinence is seriously sinful.

7. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"We need to go to the Lord first, continually and last.

When we are sad, He is our consolation.

When we have no joy, He brings us hope.

When we are weak, He is our strength.

When we are frightened, He is our courage.

He heals us when we need to be healed,

and fills us with all that we need, when we go to Him.

He will not impose His will upon us.

We decide, ourselves, whether or not to be open to the Lord and to all the incredible gifts He gives. "

Visit Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration  every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM,

and on Saturdays from 9-10 AM.

SOUP, BREAD, & BIBLE STUDY As we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, Pope Benedict XVI reminds us that we must be "guided by the Word of God." Hence, "the Church, in the Gospel texts of the Sundays of Lent, leads us to a particularly intense encounter with the Lord. "The Fourth Sunday of the Lenten journey focuses on the man born blind and presents Christ as the light of the world. This miracle indicates more than a mere physical healing; indeed, Christ desires to open our interior vision, in order to deepen our faith when we recognize him as our one true Savior. "He illuminates all that is dark in life and leads us to live as 'children of the light." Join us in the Cathedral Undercroft on Thursday, March 31 at 7:00 pm at as we encounter Christ in the Scriptures; soup and bread will be served beginning at 6:00 PM. Please bring your Bible.
