FATHER'S TWO CENTS WORTH

Well, here we are at the end of June and the beginning of July.  June has passed rather quickly, especially for myself as I get older.  It seems that I cannot get done what I have done in previous years, and there is more waiting for me all of the time.  I try to do the best that I can.  I find that I can fall asleep easier during the day than before and need to be on guard for that problem.  Next week-end is Fourth of July weekend!  There will be fireworks, vacationing, camping, relaxing, and having fun.  Please be careful!  Fireworks are pretty, but also dangerous.  Swimming and boating can be fun.  Accidents happen and people are hurt!  Take care of the precious body that God has given you to live in, so that you can enjoy the pleasures He still has in store for you!

Our collection for the CONVOY OF HOPE, the collection taken up in the Mascoutah Community for the city of Joplin, amounted to $3,110.31.  Some of the other churches gave through their denominational drives.  However, for the special collection taken up in the churches, over $9,900.00 was collected and forwarded to help Joplin, Mo.  Thanks to all who gave so generously to help those less fortunate and more devastated by the tornado.

Many ask me about my brother, and my trip to see him.  The trip was great!  I ran into a storm out around Lake St. Louis that made visibility almost nil.  But I drove through it and did not see any threats until near Pella, Iowa when the sky really got black and there was a strange streak of blue totally across the horizon.  I just sped up and got out of the way and did not have any problems.  The trip home was clear and no problems.  My brother is doing as well as can be expected.  They do not let him go walking with his walker without someone beside him, for fear that he will fall and break a bone or two.  If he fell on me, he would bounce right back up.  But he is doing all right.  I try to phone him several times a week.  It is good for both of us!

We filled the position of church help that I advertised for in the bulletin.  Brian Uhl has accepted the position.  Even though it is part-time, I am sure that there will be many a time that I call on him for extra work in church and at the rectory.  Thanks for being there for us, Brian.   Another person, a student working for Confirmation hours, has volunteered to water the flowers around church.  With all of the rain that we have had this past week, he did not get any hours.  And speaking of rain, last Sunday, I had a total of 4.8 inches of rain for the week.  Then this week, I got another 3 inches of rain on my rain gauge.  We may have to send some plumbers to heaven to slow down this rain, or divert it elsewhere.  They are having much rain north of us, which will all come down our rivers, and keep the flood stage up for at least a month.  I am sure God knows what he is doing, but we could all be asking for mercy for the crops and the farmers.

Friday is the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  It is also First Friday of the month.  Saturday is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  No Mass Saturday morning, but we will have Adoration of the Holy Eucharist from 9 to 10 A.M. in church.  Come and pray with us since there is so much to pray for—peace, the church, vocations, our parish, the sick, lapsed Catholics, health, jobs, etc.

  PARISH NEWS

The VBS Committee would like to thank Holy Childhood Church for their generous support with donations of materials and time. We had 50 volunteers from Holy Childhood alone! 257 children from our community traveled through Nazareth where Jesus was a kid. They learned that Jesus had a family, a name, a home, a church, served others, and we do too!

Gift Cards  Holy Childhood School continues to sell gift cards during the summer months.  Gift cards can be purchased at school during the summer office hours and at church after weekend masses.  Contact Debbie Bunn at 566-2866 with any questions.  Thank you for your support.

NEW MEMBERS OF THE MINISTRY OF PRAISE If you have not received your packet of materials, please check the table in front of the left altar in church.  If you have any questions, call Pat Steinberg at 566-2245.

Dear Holy Childhood School & Church Families,

As many of you are already aware, the Adam and Amy Uptergrove family is going through a lot with their youngest daughter, Olivia, who is 5 months of age. She is finally home after being in the hospital for over 60 days.  She has been diagnosed with a rare auto immune disease that causes aneurysms not only in the coronary arteries, but also other arteries throughout the body.  This condition is extremely rare in infants, and requires daily visits back to Children's Hospital to be monitored and treated.

In order to assist and bless their family in a very practical way, it has been decided to set up a meal registry for them.  This will allow Amy & Adam to concentrate not only on Baby Olivia, but on their other 3 daughters, ages 7, 6, and 3.

If you are interested in providing a meal for the Uptergrove's, we have set up a website that will coordinate all the meals.  All you need to do is to go to the website: http://mealbaby.com/viewregistry/509650, and set up a FREE account with an email and password.  Then click on their registry to view the calendar of dates available, choose a date, and type in what you will be bringing them.

Gift cards for gas or to local grocery stores such as "Shop N Save" and "Schnucks" would greatly be appreciated too as well as cash or check donations, since the medical expenses continue to accumulate. You can mail those directly to Adam & Amy Uptergrove at:  254 Eastbrook Drive, Belleville, IL 62221.

Finally, whether or not you are able to assist with a gift of a meal, gift card or donation at this time, most importantly we ask that you PLEASE keep Baby Olivia, her family and caregivers in your thoughts and prayers.  As a church family of faith, this is a simple, yet powerful thing we can do to help them. They are VERY grateful and humbled by all the prayers and support they have been given thus far.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!  If you have any questions, please let us know!

  Blessings,

 Judy Schneider & Ronda Beck

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"We need to go to the Lord first, continually and last.

When we are sad, He is our consolation.

When we have no joy, He brings us hope.

When we are weak, He is our strength.

When we are frightened, He is our courage.

He heals us when we need to be healed,

and fills us with all that we need, when we go to Him.

He will not impose His will upon us.

We decide, ourselves, whether or not to be open to the Lord and to all the incredible gifts He gives. "

Visit Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration  every Tuesday following the 8 AM Mass until 7 PM,

and on Saturdays from 9-10 AM.

If you would like to commit to a specific hour to pray on Tuesdays,

NEWS AROUND TOWN

Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues: Gluttony & Lust (Part III of III).  Join Fr. Robert Barron for this engaging presentation on the seven deadly sins, which inhibit our flourishing in our relationship with God and with one another. Borrowing from Dante's Divine Comedy, Fr. Barron demonstrates how the deadly sins are internal patterns of dysfunction leading ultimately to man's unhappiness.  Fr. Barron shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns, however, by developing the seven lively virtues. These virtues offer antidotes to each sin and help us on the path to healing and happiness. Join us for the Cathedral Adult Faith Formation on Thursday, June 30 at 7:00 PM in the Undercroft as we conclude our study of the deadly sins with an exploration of gluttony and lust.
